Haphazard construction at Chowkidinghee opposed

By STAFF CORRESPONDENT

DIBRUGARH, June 23 - The All Dibrugarh Students Union (ADSU) has opposed haphazard construction of several so-called amenities at Chowkidinghee ground here under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation and instead demanded installation of high altitude illumination and general uplift of the ground.

The students body is opposed to the district administrations idea of constructing kids play area, open gym and garden with jogging park on one side of the ground. In a memorandum submitted to the Deputy Commissioner here yesterday, ADSU said that implementation of such schemes could be implemented at some other location of the town.

The students body stated that the ground would become congested and would become an impediment to all the other activities taking place in the ground like jogging, sports, socio-cultural, literary and other mela events etc.

Holding state and national events like Independence and Republic Day, conducting polls etc will also become difficult once the open space of the ground is reduced, the students body said and further pointed out that the amenities once constructed would eventually face demolition due to successive governments negligence over a period of time.

The ADSU therefore urged the district administration to develop the existing jogging track into a synthetic track and also to ensure that no permanent construction is undertaken inside the jogging track.

They also asked the administration to scientifically construct drains on all four sides of the ground. Unplanned setting up of two tennis courts in the ground has already prevented setting up of a 400 metre 8-lane running track, thereby severely constricting athletic activities at the ground.
