GUWAHATI, Oct 27 - Questioning NRC Coordinator Prateek Hajela�s sudden transfer, the Forum Against Citizenship Act Amendment Bill has said that the Supreme Court must take all NRC-related data and documents within its own supervision so that vested interest groups cannot take the advantage of the situation arising after Hajela�s transfer.
Terming the IAS officer�s transfer illogical, the forum, which has been raising its voice against the CAB, said that there are chances of fraudulent alteration of data by vested interest groups if Hajela leaves at this point.
�If any official faces a threat to his life because of discharging his duty in a free and fair way, the logical thing is to ensure his full protection, rather than transferring him. The NRC was a mammoth exercise, and the chances of some errors cannot be ruled out. However, there are statutory ways to address those concerns,� the forum members stated.
The forum also alleged that since NRC Coordinator Hajela was working in an unbiased manner, the outcome of the NRC was not liked by some sections of people. �He was criticised and condemned by different groups who were expecting a different proportion of illegal migrants, to take political mileage out of the situation,� it added.
�Once Hajela leaves, the vested interest groups might try to alter the facts and figures to suit their own agenda. If this happens, anarchy would prevail in the State and the entire purpose of updating the NRC would be defeated,� the forum stated, adding that Prateek Hajela should be given some more time to put the entire process in order, eliminating all chances of its manipulation.
