Hailstorms lash State

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 30 As a welcome development, rains and thundershowers have started lashing the State bringing an end to the prolonged dry spell during this pre-monsoon season. This development, though taking place not on time, has brought an end to the anxiety of the people over drastic climatic change. The development is taking place since March 26.

That the hailstorms are also accompanying thundershowers has also brought much relief to the common people here.

Today, hailstorms lashed many parts of the State and the city was lashed thrice by the icy hails.

Regional Meteorological Centre (RNC) sources here attribute this change in the weather condition to a cyclonic circulation persisting over the Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and adjoining areas and the two troughs accompanying it.

One of the troughs is extending up to 3.6 km above the sea level and the other is on the low surface running between Bangladesh and the NE Assam across Meghalaya, RMC sources said.

Hailstorms were reported from many parts of the city, Tezpur and Nagaon today, while since March 26, Tezpur, Golokganj, Gossaigaon, Dhubri and Amingaon, among others, reported hailstorm spells, said the sources.

The RMC has forecast the likelihood of rain or thundershower at most places over the NE region during the next 24 hours and a generally cloudy sky with rain or thundershower in some areas of the city during the period.

The rainfall and thunderstorm activities have brought down the day and night temperatures in the region and many parts of the region today recorded the fall in the maximum temperature between two degree Celsius and 7 degree Celsius. However, barring Aizwal and Kohima, the minimum temperature has remained above their respective normals in all the places of the region.

The RMC has stated that the city is likely to record a maximum temperature of 22 degree Celsius (C) and a minimum temperature of 18 degree C tomorrow. The city today recorded a maximum temperature of 22.8 degree C and a minimum temperature of 18.5 degree C.
