MANGALDAI, Jan 9 - Over a hundred families have been left homeless as an unprecedented hailstorm lashed Darrang district at noon today. The hailstorm caused serious damages to several villages in the eastern part of the district. Villages like Nagajani, Mowamari, Fakirpara, Shyampur, Ojagaon etc., under Dalgaon LAC were the worst-affected villages. The hailstorm blew away roofs of many houses and damaged walls, ceilings and different valuable household properties including television sets, refrigerators, ceiling fans etc.

Many mature trees were uprooted and high voltage power supply lines and posts have also been damaged. The actual loss of property has not yet been assessed but it will definitely cross several lakhs of rupees, sources said. Even though no loss of life and livestock has been reported, a few children have reportedly sustained minor injuries in Nagajani and Mowamari areas.
