Hailakandi police busts fake currency racket

HAILAKANDI, June 16 � Following Intelligence inputs, Hailakandi police on Saturday busted an inter-State fake currency racket and nabbed a person in connection with the case.

Police also recovered fake notes worth 1.50 lakh rupees from the possession of the arrested person who has been identified as Kamal Uddin Laskar (28), a resident of Bhagabazar area of Cachar district.

Police sources informed that they had information that a team from Bhagabazar would enter Hailakandi district on Saturday in order to distribute fake notes and a team of Hailakandi police led by DSP Khalil Uddin Ahmed started a massive search on the Silchar-Hailakandi road and spotted three suspicious persons riding on a motorcycle in Syedbond area of Hailakandi district. Two of them managed to escape from the spot with the motorcycle, but police picked up Kamal Uddin and recovered 1.5 lakh rupees from his possession.

Police informed that Kamal Uddin has confessed that he is associated with the fake currency racket. Hailakandi SP Hemanta Bhattacharjee informed that a big racket of fake currency is active in the Jirighat area of Cachar district along the Assam-Manipur border and members of the racket were systematically releasing fake notes in Hailakandi district.

He further informed that a search operation is on to unearth more information in this regard. Police investigation is on and a case has been registered against Kamal Uddin under Section 489 (B) of the FICN, he disclosed.
