Hailakandi KVK bid to enhance poultry produce

By Correspondent

HAILAKANDI, June 29 The Krishi Vigyan Kendra of Hailakandi distributed an improved variety of poultry chicks (Vanaraja) on the KVK premises here for livelihood enhancement of the backward community of the district on June 27. Altogether 30 beneficiaries were given the chicks. Each beneficiary received seven chicks each.

It may be mentioned here that Vanaraja is a dual purpose variety developed by the project directorate on poultry exclusively for free range poultry farming in rural and tribal areas. It is handy and has better immune competence, thus well suited for rearing under harsh conditions. It has multi-colour plumage and lays brown eggs. The body weight of the bird at 12 weeks of age ranges from 1.5 kg to 1.8 kg.

Other important features of these birds include attractive multi-colour feather pattern, high general immune competence, performance on low plain of nutrition, faster growth, laying of more eggs than deshi hen.

These chicks have high demand due to their high egg yields and faster growth. The KVK has already distributed thousands of chicks and eggs of the same variety to farmers who are very much happy with the performance of these birds, said a KVK official.
