Hailakandi girls emerge champs

GUWAHATI, July 26 � Kiyang Khasia Memorial Tribal High School of Hailakandi clinched the title in the Pulin Das Memorial U-17 Inter District School Girls Football Championship.

In the final of the championship, played at the Nahru Stadium here today, the Hailakandi girls trounced South Mazbat High School of Udalguri 3-1.

The Hailakandi team went 2-0 ahead in the 31st minute as Panchami Debnath (18th minute) and Trimalata Debbarma (31st minute) netted one goal each.

Panchami made it 3-0 in the 48th minute with an eye-catching goal. The Udalguri team tried to make a comeback withRuhi Orang�s 55th minute goal.

But the effort was not enough as the sturdy Hailakandi girls took complete control of the situation in the later part of the match.

Now the winning team will represent Assam in the All India Subroto Mukherjee Cup Football Tournament to be played in New Delhi in September.

Sports Minister Ajit Singh was the chief guest in the closing function and handed over the trophies.

Director of Sports and Youth Welfare incharge Anjan Sarma, Deputy Director Pradip Hazarika, former footballers Debashis Roy, Ramesh Phukan were also present on the occasion. Altogether 15 schools took part in the meet which was organised by the Directorate of Sports.
