HAILAKANDI, June 22 - The flood situation in Hailakandi district has improved considerably during the past four days.
The water level has receded with the three major rivers, viz. Katakhal, Dholeswari and Barak flowing below the danger level. Of the 331 villages, 105 are now under water.
The number of relief camps has come down from 145 to 31 and houses 33,128 inmates. All the relief camps under Lala and Katlicherra revenue circles have been closed down.
In all, 47 medical teams have been presently deployed and are visiting the affected areas and relief camps under Algapur and Hailakandi revenue circles. A 10-member specialist team from Silchar Medical College and Hospital will soon arrive in Hailakandi district.
Deputy Commissioner Adil Khan said that officials and employees engaged in flood-related works have been discharging their duties with utmost sincerity and maintaining transparency in distribution of relief items to the flood-affected people.
�There is no complaint from any part of the district regarding distribution of foodstuff,� clarified Khan.
Khan disclosed that the administration has so far distributed 4,784.91 quintals of rice, 447 quintals of dal, 271.29 quintals of salt, 2,977.89 kg chira, 1,210 kg jaggery, 31,785 biscuit packets, 8,759 milk packets for the flood-hit people and 455 quintals of wheat bran for the affected livestock.
Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will visit Hailakandi on Saturday to take stock of the flood situation in the district. He will hold a review meeting with the officials.
