HAILAKANDI, July 18 - Following receding of flood waters in Hailakandi district, Deputy Commissioner, Keerthi Jalli today visited various flood-affected areas to make an assessment of the extent of damage.
The Deputy Commissioner visited Bowerghat, Rangauti Part 1, Kalacherra and Samarikona affected areas besides the Rajyeswarpur, Tosla and Wangkai Lankai embankments and directed them to strengthen the embankments on a war footing before the next wave of flood. She visited Kalacherra and instructed the Public Works Department officials to repair the culverts and bridge approach immediately. Jalli also visited the erosion-affected areas caused by Barak river under Kalinagar Part II of Algapur revenue circle. She visited the Pola sluice gate to see whether it's functioning or not to its full capacity.
The Deputy Commissioner asked the officials of the water resources and other line departments to make field visits for proper assessment of the extent of damages caused by the current wave of flood in the four revenue circles of the district and to submit detailed damage reports. The flood situation further improved in the district with water level of Katakhal, Dhaleswari and Barak rivers flowing below the danger mark.
The Public Health Engineering department has been distributing water purifying chemicals and water pouch to the flood-affected areas. Medical teams are making frequent visits to the flood-hit areas and distributing medicines free of cost. 210 quintals of wheat bran have been distributed for the affected livestock. Veterinary camps are being conducted to provide treatment to the affected animals.
The agriculture department has started seed sowing and land preparation for setting up community nurseries at Dinanathpur, Hadishnagar and Kuchila for flood affected farmers. Over 25,000 farm families have been hit by floods in the district, according to a report.
