Haflong AIR Centre gaining popularity

By Correspondent

HAFLONG, July 10 - Despite the lack of infrastructure and shortage of staff, the Haflong AIR has been able to maintain popularity among the people of Dima Hasao in general and the rural masses in particular.

The Haflong AIR which is a Frequency Modulation Centre, was inaugurated by the then Union Minister for Information Broadcasting, Ajit Panja in presence of the then Chief Minister of Assam Hiteswar Saikia and others way back in 1992 with a promise to cover entire district. But after a few years, the Haflong AIR failed to draw the attention of the authority concerned with the result that it became a mere radio station having less coverage and programmes.

The entire district of Dima Hasao had passed through a critical situation in the last several years due to insurgency, which also affected the functioning of the AIR Haflong. People from outside never wanted to come to the district in those days, but with the return of peace in the district, the situation has changed remarkably and the importance of Haflong AIR has also increased encouragingly.

The existing officials and others though less in number are gradually becoming more proactive to offer popular and beneficial programmes like Bhakti Sangeet, Haflong Diary, Yuva Vani, Kisan Vani, Chitra Geet etc., but due to limitation in coverage, villagers in remote areas are deprived of listening to these informative programmes.

The gaonburhas of villages like Tungje, Hangrum, Bor Chenam, Doheng, Laisong etc., are of the opinion that since the villagers in these remote villages do not have other means of media at their disposal except AIR FM, the authority concerned has to increase the coverage limit of the Haflong AIR and also add some more programmes, discarding a few programmes which are not beneficial to the people.
