GUWAHATI, Sept 10 - The indefinite strike by GVK EMRI employees continued for the sixth consecutive day today, affecting emergency response service across the State.

The striking staff staged a demonstration in front of the office of the National Health Mission (NHM) at Christian Basti here today.

The NHM Managing Director has called us for a meeting. Our representatives told him that unless the government intervenes, there cannot be any solution to the issues. The MD has sought two days time. Let us see, but our strike will continue, a leader of the employees union said.

Leaders of the AITUC, KMSS and other unions joined the striking employees at the demonstration site today.

The Assam Petroleum Mazdoor Union is likely to resort to a daylong strike on Wednesday as a show of solidarity with the staff of the emergency response service provider who are protesting the alleged violation of labour laws by the company.

Government sources said the Labour Commissioner is also likely to call for a meeting on Wednesday in a bid to hammer out a solution to the issues raised by the agitating employees.

GVK EMRI authorities did not respond to calls from this reporter.
