GUWAHATI, April 12: With the monsoon approaching, concerns are mounting over the lack of cleaning and desiltation of drains and major water channels in the city, as the process has yet to begin.
Speaking to this correspondent, a contractor and resident of Guwahati said that desiltation work – typically undertaken ahead of the monsoon to prevent waterlogging – has not been initiated this year. “Usually, the first phase of cleaning and desiltation is carried out in February and March, followed by subsequent phases in June and September. A fourth phase is also taken up in low-lying areas if required,” he said.
“Although there were discussions this season, the work was not executed,” he added.
The delay has raised serious concerns about artificial flooding, a recurring problem in the city during the rainy season. Contractors warned that without timely desiltation, several low-lying areas could remain submerged during heavy rainfall.
Sources further claimed that pending dues have affected infrastructure maintenance, with nearly half of the city’s contractors reportedly unpaid during the last fiscal year.
Meanwhile, several city roads are in a deplorable condition due to prolonged neglect. Maintenance work has not been carried out since October last year, causing inconvenience to commuters. Potholes, uneven surfaces, and loose pebbles have made many stretches hazardous, particularly for two-wheeler riders.
Although repair work was undertaken in some areas, most interior roads and bylanes continue to remain in a poor condition. “MRD Road was revamped after the flyover inauguration, but the work was done hurriedly, compromising quality,” alleged another contractor.
