Guwahati, Jun 4: Assam today suspended new first dose of Covaxin, one of the two COVID 19 vaccines being administered in the State, due to limited stock.

Addressing a press conference here, State Health Minister Keshab Mahanta said, "For the time being, we are suspending Covaxin first dose in the State. There is short supply of this vaccine." If the supply increases later, it will once again be opened, he added. He, however, added that those eligible for a second dose of Covaxin will be given their jab in due time. The State currently has 20,000 Covaxin doses, including 15,000 received today, and about 50,000 doses are expected within a week.

About 1.5 lakh Covaxin vaccines were given as first dose in the month of May for 18-44 years category, and the second doses are due from this week. Besides Covaxin, Covishield is administered in the State, which is reportedly available in adequate supply at the moment. While people above 45 years of age have not been facing much difficulties in getting their vaccine, those in 18-44 years are having hurdles in getting their jab.
