Guwahati: Circle Officer of Thelamara Revenue Circle Barenya Ranjan Barthakur apprehended by a team of Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption

Guwahati, Oct 02: On the basis of a complaint alleging demand of bribe, a trap was laid on 27/09/2021 by a team of Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption, Assam in Guwahati, Kamrup (M) District. At around 6.15 PM, one Sri Gulzar Hussain, Lat Mandal, Thelamara Revenue Circle, District- Sonitpur, Assam was caught red handed by the team while he was accepting a bribe of Rs. 50,000/-(Rupees fifty thousand only ) from the complainant.

The Lat Mandal, as part of conspiracy, was threatening and harassing the complainant by falsely informing him that the name of the complainant had been included in the list of middlemen involved in dealings of land. The arrested accused person was claiming to have prepared the list of such 'Dalals' for taking action against them. He had been demanding Rs. 8,00,000/- (Rupees eight lakhs only) from the complainant as bribe for removing his name from the above-mentioned list and for sparing him from ensuing legal action against him.

The tainted bribe money was recovered from the possession of Sri Gulzar Hussain in front of Satsang Vihar, Bhangagarh, Guwahati in the presence of independent witnesses.

A case was registered in Anti-Corruption Bureau Police Station vide ACB PS case No. 09/2021 U/S 7(a) of PC Act against him. It may be mentioned that Sh. Barenya Ranjan Barthakur, ALRS (Assam Land and Revenue Service) who is presently posted as Circle Officer of Thelamara Revenue Circle, District Sonitpur is also a named accused in the above-mentioned case.

Interrogation of the arrested accused Gulzar Hussain revealed that the bribe was demanded by him at the instruction of Sri Barenya Ranjan Barthakur, ALRS, Circle Officer, Thelamara. During the preliminary investigation, the involvement of the Circle Officer has been found in the case.

On Saturday at around 2.30 PM, Sh. Barenya Ranjan Barthakur has been apprehended by a team of Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption, Assam from Kahilipara area in connection with above mentioned case while he was travelling in a car bearing Registration No. AS01EE 0877. The car in which he was travelling at the time of interception by the team of Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption had 'PRESS' sticker affixed on the windscreen.

The apprehended accused person has been brought to the ACB Police Station for further action as per law. The investigation of the case is under progress.
