Guwahati, May 5: Containment zones have been declared in parts of three municipal wards of Guwahati, Assam's main city, as COVID 19 positive cases surged in the city over the last few days.

Kamrup (Metro) deputy commissioner Biswajit Pegu said here today that parts of Ward no. 8, 16 and 28 have been declared as containment zones as number of new COVID 19 positive cases in these areas crossed the mark of 400 in the last seven days.

The order will be effective from 2 PM tomorrow, and will remain in force until orders, with the DC adding that the situation will be reviewed periodically before lifting or extending the order. Exemption to essential services and medical emergencies has been given in the containment zones, with offices that fall under essential services also allowed to operate while following COVID 19 safety protocols.

In the containment zones, grocery, fruit and milk shops will be allowed to open from 8 AM to 12 noon, while mobile vending and home delivery of essentials, including vegetables, meat and fish, will also be allowed. Further, e-commerce services delivery will also be allowed till 6 PM, the DC added.

No unauthorized entry or exit of persons will be allowed and all existing COVID 19 protocols will be in force, and any violation will invite action under the relevant laws, Pegu said.
