Guwahati, June 2: Railway connectivity to Assam and the North East is likely to get a boost as the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CSR) has accorded sanction for opening ofthe Jalpaipuri Road-Y Leg section, comprising one block section of 5 km, and the Betgara-Kolaigram section, comprising three bock sections of 23 km, double line falling on the Rajdhani route.
This is the busiest route of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) connecting Guwahati to the rest of India. "Double lines have been commissioned along with railway electrification in both these sections.Completion of doubling in these sections will help in operation of more freight traffic to and from the North East region. The entire work was completed during the Covid-19 pandemic situation by observing necessary safety protocols. Jalpaipuri Road-Y Leg section was the only super critical work left to be completed in the NFR.
This section has an important bridge of 970 metre length on the river Teesta. This section was a bottleneck as double lines on either side of this block section already existed. Doubling on either side of the YLeg is important as this junction provides an alternate route between New Jalpaiguri and New Coochbehar. The Betgara-Kolaigram section is a part of New Mainaguri-Gumanihat doubling project which is a critical work of the NFR. Beingon the busiest route, this doubling gives a lot of advantage in increasing the line capacity of this section. A permanent speed restriction of 90 km per hour has also been removed in the process of this doubling," said an official statement issued today.
"It is expected that with the completion of these two critical sections trains to and from North-East will be able to move at a much faster speed," the statement added.
