Guwahati, May 2: Jailed peasant leader Akhil Gogoi became the first in Assam to win an election while lodged behind the bars. Gogoi won with 57,219 votes in Sibsagar LAC, as per ECI official data.

He had contested as a Raijor Dal candidate, which was formed last year with an eye on the state polls. As the party is yet to be registered with the Election Commission of India, his victory will be marked as that of an Independent candidate.

Akhil, imprisoned since December 2019 when he was picked up from Jorhay during the peak of the anti-CAA protests in the state, had submitted his nomination paper from the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital here, where he is currently lodged.

He had not visited the constituency for any campaigning as he is yet to procure bail in all the cases against him. Akhil is facing sedition charges, among others.
