GUWAHATI, Oct 3 - The newly formed Boxing Federation of India (BFI) has decided to allot the Senior Men National Boxing Championship to Guwahati and the Assam Amateur Boxing Association gladly accepted the offer.
The State boxing body secretary Hemanta Kumar Kalita, who is also elected as the treasurer of the BFI in the recently held election, intimating the media today said, they will hold the championship in a befitting manner in the city here. Top boxers of the country like Shiva Thapa, Manoj Kumar, Bikash Kishan will be seen in action during the meet which will be held in the second week of December.
The newly elected BFI president Ajay Singh of Uttarakhand, who is also the CMD of SpiceJet, was also present in the press conference. He said that the Indian boxing has suffered a lot as the BFI was disbanded about four years back due to which the Indian boxers had to stay away from the international championships.
But now onwards they will leave no stone unturned in order to bring back its glory which has been ushered in by some world class boxers like Vijender Singh, Shiva Thapa, Mary Kom among others.
Singh further revealed that they are planning to set up six more boxing academies in the country, one in the city here. He said that the nation, particularly in the North Eastern region, has tremendous potentiality in boxing, and to tap new talents, they are planning to start the national championships immediately. Prior to the men�s championship, the senior national women's championship will also be organized in the last week of November. He also vowed to hire world class coaches for best possible training.
