GUWAHATI, May 12 - Defending champions Guwahati booked a berth in the final of the Nuruddin Ahmed Trophy Elite Group Senior Inter District Cricket Tournament.
Guwahati by the virtue of their 51-run first innings lead beat Nagaon in the first semifinal of the championship at the Assam Cricket Association�s stadium at Barsapara here today.
Chasing a challenging first innings total of 250 set by Guwahati, Nagaon resuming at an overnight total of 49 for five were all out for 199 after 76.5 overs of batting on the final day of the two-day match. Ranji players Amit Sinha and Dhiraj Goswami were the only notable contributors while other batsmen failed in countering the Guwahati bowling. Amit scored 65 off 111 balls while Dhiraj�s contribution was 105-ball 52.
Guwahati bowlers Abir Chakraborty (5/47), Mantu Das (4/52) wrecked the Nagaon innings with devastating spells.
At one stage Nagaon were tottering at 11 for four in 5.1 overs. But due to courageous batting by the duo of Amit and Dhiraj gave Nagaon some respectability.
At close Guwahati were 63 for one when the match came to an end.
In the second semifinal from tomorrow Dibrugarh will square off against NF Railway SA at the same venue.
