Guwahati retain I-D soccer title

GUWAHATI, March 6 � Defending champions Guwahati lifted the Khirod Baruah Trophy emerging champions in the 61st Senior Inter District Football Championship.

In the well contested final at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium, Sarusajai here today, the host team edged past Dibrugarh 3-1. Apurba Phukan drew first blood for Guwahati in the 5th minute. But just before the breather, Mintu Boro restored parity off a melee.

In the second session, the momentum of the game increased to a respectable height and the ball swung from one end to another quite frequently. Maneswar Musahary put the host team 2-1 ahead in the 71st minute with a sharp heading off a measured floater sent by Bipul Singh. It was Shyam Murah who hammered the final nail to the Dibrugarh coffin in the 82nd minute.

The final match was conducted by Nripen Talukdar of Barpeta and he was assisted by Hasmot Ali (Barpeta) and Khargeswar Das (Nalbari). Fourth official was Hiren Gogoi of Nazira. The championship was organised by Guwahati Sports Association.

Noted sports organiser Dr Tapan Dutta was the chief guest in the prize distribution ceremony. AFA official Plabon Baruah and former GSA president Pulak Goswami were also present on the occasion.
