Guwahati-Murkongselek inter-city train

By Correspondent

NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Aug 3 - The introduction of the much-awaited Guwahati-Murkongselek inter-city passenger train from ninth of this month has been hailed by various public organisations as a fulfilment of a long standing demand of the people of this border region of the State for better connectivity with the rest of the country.

However, the time of arrival and departure of the inter-city train from the North Lakhimpur railway station is a matter of concern. It has been learnt that the train will arrive North Lakhimpur at 2:30 am which will cause a lot of trouble for the public using this mode of transportation. This has been stated by the Lakhimpur Chambers of Commerce in a press release.

The traders body has already sent a request letter to the Northeast Frontier Railway asking them to make minor changes on the schedule of the train for its up and down services. They requested the railway authorities to arrange the departure of the upward inter-city train from Guwahati at 10 pm so that it reaches North Lakhimpur at a convenient time in the morning. Similarly, they also sought a departure time of 5 pm in its downward journey from Murkongselek so that it stops at North Lakhimpur railway station at a convenient time in the evening.

Otherwise, the traders body said, this railway service would be meaningless and of no use for a large number of public in the Lakhimpur district. The Lakhimpur Chambers of Commerce also stated that massive public protests would be organised in North Lakhimpur that will also include programmes like rail-roko if the demand is not met by the NF Railway.

Similar requests have also been made by the KB Road Nagarik Samaj, a civic organisation of North Lakhimpur.
