GUWAHATI, Aug 16 - Along with the rest of the State, Guwahati city too witnessed observance of the 73rd Independence Day by different organisations and entities.
The Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (ASCPCR) observed Independence Day at its office with some poor and deprived children. Dr Sunita Changkakati, Chairperson ASCPCR, hoisted the Tricolour.
The children were reminded of the songs of freedom which were sung by generations whose sacrifices have only made India stronger and better. Dr Changkakati also motivated the children to have a greater sense of growth and responsibility to serve the nation and to always be kind to those who need love and care to grow.
The celebration saw children taking part in different games and activities after the flag hoisting. The programme ended with a prize distribution ceremony and refreshments for children.
CRPF, 128 Bn celebrated the day at its Bn Hqr IOC Complex Noonmati. Surjeet Kumar Atri, Commandant 128 Bn, hoisted the national flag and explained the importance of the occasion.
NF Railway and NF Railway (Construction) celebrated the day at their respective headquarters at Maligaon as well as across the various divisions under their respective zones with a variety of programmes.
Don Bosco School, Panbazar, celebrated Independence Day with a colourful programme on the school football field. The chief guest on the occasion was Shashank Shekhar Shastri, Managing Director, The Assam Co-operative Apex Bank Ltd., who unfurled the Tricolour in the presence of school Principal Fr Sebastian Mathew, veteran Salesian Fr CV George and other dignitaries besides students, school staff, NCC, Army and Navy scouts, parents and guardians.
Certificates were also awarded to the scouts and NCC cadets who had excelled and won laurels. A colourful march-past and a cultural programme comprising patriotic songs and skits were other highlights.
Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya, the premier eye care institution of the North East, celebrated Independence Day on its premises. A brief function was held on the occasion including hoisting of the Tricolour.
Former State DGP Mukesh Sahay hoisted the national flag as chief guest on the occasion. Dr Harsha Bhattacharjee, president of Nethralaya, welcomed the chief guest, trustees and their families and members of the managing committee, doctors, community patients, students and staff members of the institution besides some school children who had assembled to witness the proceedings of the significant event of the nation.
The 73rd Independence Day was observed at the Assam Jatiya Bidyalay, Noonmati. The Tricolour was hoisted by Principal Ghanashyam Medhi in the presence of students, teachers, guardians, school staff and many other well-wishers. He delivered a speech commemorating the sacrifices of the martyrs of the country. A colourful cultural programme followed next on the open stage of the school with a patriotic song sung by some of the students of the school.
The people of Panjabari celebrated the 73rd Independence Day with a daylong programme of flag hoisting, public meeting and a cultural show.
The Tricolour was unfurled in the morning by retired bureaucrat and president of Panjabari Senior Citizens� Association (PSCA) DB Chetri who in his speech paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi and other martyrs and freedom fighters of the country.
Senior journalist DN Chakravartty dwelt at length on the seven chapters of the country�s struggle for freedom initiated in 1760 by the princes and nobles, which was followed by tribal revolts and uprising by peasants.
The cultural programme held on the occasion was highlighted by Bhupendra Sangeet by septuagenarian former banker Jivan Goswami, Kabin Das, Kangkan Goswami, Samim Akhtar and the members of Kala Sainik with their different kinds of patriotic songs.
The residents of Games Village also celebrated the day in a befitting manner. President of the residents� welfare committee Abdul Mutalib who unfurled the Tricolour, recalled the significance of the day and emphasised realising the dreams of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi by ensuring cleanliness and hygiene in the country. Guru Nanak National High School, Gopinath Nagar, also celebrated the day with a daylong programme.
State Bank of India celebrated the 73rd Independence Day at its local head office at Dispur here. The national flag was unfurled by Sunil Kumar Tandon, Chief General Manager, SBI North Eastern Circle. The staff members and their children presented a colourful, entertaining cultural programme of dances and songs on the occasion.
Headquarter Additional Director General of Border Roads Organisation located in BRO Complex at Jalukbari, celebrated Independence Day on its picturesque campus on airport road.
The celebration commenced with hoisting of the national flag by PKH Singh, officiating Addl DGBR (East) in the presence of all officers and troops. Casual paid labourers and children were also present on the occasion.
The 73rd Independence Day was celebrated by the Border Security Force Guwahati Frontier at Patgaon, with great enthusiasm and fervour. Piyush Mordia, Inspector General of the Frontier unfurled the national flag and addressed the personnel. He also visited patients at the BSF Hospital to distribute sweets and wished them early recovery.
Independence Day was also celebrated by the 33rd Battalion of ITBP in the city. An impressive parade held on the occasion was led by Assistant Commandant Pushpendra Rathore.
The Gauhati Commerce College celebrated the 73rd Independence Day by hoisting the Tricolour on the college and hostel premises. Prizes of the patriotic song and quiz competitions held on August 10 and 14 respectively were distributed on the occasion. A rally was also taken out to mark the occasion.
The Food Corporation of India, NE zone organised a plantation programme at New Guwahati to celebrate the occasion. The event was chaired by Anurag Gupta, Executive Director, FCI Zonal office, NE.
The GIC Pensioners� Association celebrated the 73rd Independence Day by planting 73 saplings on the premises of Balaji Temple, Betkuchi. The association members also visited Shishu Mangal Kendra located at Noonmati and distributed sweets and other essential food items among the inmates.
