Guvs message on Red Cross Day

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, May 7 - In a message on the World Red Cross Day tomorrow, Governor of Assam & Nagaland PB Acharya has said that the Red Cross movement has been assisting suffering people across the world.

He said that the World Red Cross Day is dedicated to alleviating human suffering, upholding human dignity, protecting life, and preventing emergencies and natural disasters such as floods, epidemics and earthquakes. The fundamental principles recognised during World Red Cross Day are impartiality, humanity, independence, neutrality, universality and unity. All components of Red Cross organisations uphold and respect these principles.

The World Red Cross Day is meant to inspire, facilitate and promote all humanitarian activities carried out by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and National Societies, which are its members. This is the day when members of the international Red Cross movement raise the need of assisting suffering people. People are reminded of the need of protecting their lives as well as the dignity of the victims of any armed conflicts and all situations of violence.

Every year May 8 is celebrated as the World Red Cross Day to honour the International Red Cross Crescent Movement founder, Henry Dunant, who was born on this day in 1828. National Societies affiliated to the ICRC celebrates the World Red Cross Day in their countries. This event highlights international services such as reunion of separated family members through the Red Cross.
