By Correspondent

BARPETA, Oct 18 - Barpeta Sattra Management Committee has urged upon the Governor of Assam to take necessary steps for all-round development of the historic Sattra. In a memorandum to the constitutional head of the State, the committee informed him about the history, background and the rich heritage of the Sattra and also narrated the problems faced by it.

The memorandum signed by Burha Sattriya Bashishtha Dev Sarma, Deka Sattriya Nabajit Das Pathak and Secretary of the Sattra Management Committee Mahananda Pathak informed the Governor that several manuscripts and other valuable materials have been preserved in the Sattra for centuries. But due to lack of proper place and scientific methods, these valuable items face threat of damage.

Without proper preservation it has become difficult to exhibit the materials and manuscripts for thousands of tourists who arrive here every year with great curiosity. Therefore, the committee requested the Governor to sanction an amount to build a scientific museum in the Sattra. It was also informed that an estimate worth Rs 1.41 crore has been submitted to the Government of Assam through the Deputy Commissioner of Barpeta.

The management committee communicated to the Governor about the large-scale encroachment in the Sattra land, which has created problems for the holy institution. They requested him to take urgent measures to evict the encroachers. It was also requested that necessary steps should be taken to develop Barpeta Sattra as an attractive tourist spot.

Earlier, Governor Banwarilal Purohit arrived here today with a day-long programme. He was accorded the ceremonial Guard of Honour in the Circuit House on his arrival. Just after formal felicitation by the district administration, he had a discussion with the heads of the government departments of the district in the conference room of the Deputy Commissioners office.

The Governor also participated in another meeting with the MLAs of the district where representatives of the civic bodies and some NGOs were also present.
