Guv greets Kamrup admin on City Animal

GUWAHATI, June 9 - Governor PB Acharya has congratulated the Kamrup Metropolitan district administration on taking the initiative for declaring the Gangetic River Dolphin as the mascot for the State capital.

In a statement here today, the Governor said, �Congratulations to Deputy Commissioner and his team for taking all interest for declaring the Gangetic River Dolphin as the City Animal. The move will help in generating awareness for this protected creature which is on the verge of extinction.�

It may be mentioned that Guwahati has become the first city in the country to have its City Animal. �Good to have a City Animal in the form of Gangetic River Dolphin which will be considered as the city�s mascot and will create awareness for the animal which is an important element of Assam�s rich and unparalleled biodiversity,� the Governor stated .

He also appealed to the people of Assam to protect and preserve other endangered animals and birds to save them from extinction.
