Guv for resolution of Manipur varsity crisis

By Correspondent

IMPHAL, June 18 - Manipur Governor Dr Najma Heptulla has expressed the need to resolve the ongoing crisis in Manipur University over the demand for replacement of Vice Chancellor Prof Adya Prasad Pandey.

Dr Heptulla said this while speaking to media at Raj Bhavan here on Monday. She said she wanted the ongoing crisis to be resolved at the earliest by addressing the grievances of the university students.

She said she would be meeting the agitating student community of the varsity to hear their grievances and resolve the issues.

Manipur University students have been demanding replacement of the Vice Chancellor alleging that he has failed to take any initiative for the development of the institution, leaving the university in a paralysed state. They had launched the indefinite shutdown on May 31.

However, Prof Pandey has claimed that he has done all he can for the university after assuming charge about 18 months back. Regarding the charges of frequent tours against him, the VC clarified that whenever he goes out, it has always been for the welfare of the students and the university.

The VC said MU has become the first university in the country to open Smart Class in every department. So far 31 Smart Classes have been conducted for every department in the university, he said and added that four meetings of the Finance Committee have been held.
