Guv for more research to boost education

GUWAHATI, Nov 24 - Governor Banwarilal Purohit has urged the teaching fraternity of the State to take up the avowed mission of promoting research work in the State and contribute to a qualitative lift of education, said an official press release here.

Addressing the 57th annual conference of the Association of Microbiologists of India and International Symposium on �Microbes and Biosphere, What�s New What�s Next� in Birinchi Kumar Baruah Auditorium of the Gauhati University today, Purohit said that for education to be in the driver�s seat for the welfare of humanity, research work should be given importance and the huge pool of man and material should be adequately used for the promotion of research.

Purohit said that he being at the helm of affairs in the State has always been laying emphasis on the promotion of education and its qualitative improvement so that education, especially higher education, can be a force multiplier to all-round development of the State. He also stressed development of moral character of the students and said that education should motivate them to be morally strong and take the job of nation building and popularise the cause of cleanliness under the Swachh Bharat Mission.

Sharing his experiences, Purohit said that after taking over charge as Governor of the State, he travelled to 16 districts and in all the districts he witnessed the problems of garbage disposal and pollution and vowed to utilise the administrative machinery to address these issues. He also called upon the teachers of the seats of higher education to lend their expertise to enhance the well-being of humanity and find solutions to the diseases causing microbes.

The workshop, which was organised jointly by the Department of Botany, Gauhati University and the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology, saw convergence of several national and international experts in the field of microbiology. Minister of Science and Technology Keshab Mahanta and Vice Chancellor of Gauhati University Dr Mridul Hazarika also spoke on the occasion.
