GUTA concern at Dokmoka lynching

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, June 13 - The Gauhati University Teachers Association (GUTA) has expressed its grave concern over the incident of lynching of two youths from Guwahati, at Panjuri village under Dokmoka police station recently. The Association conveyed its deep condolences to the bereaved family members of the youths.

In a statement, the Association demanded proper enquiry into the incident and exemplary punishment to all those involved in the incident by expediting the process through fast track court.

There is intolerance among the people and an increased tendency to take the law into their hands. The government and the society must work together to curb these menaces. As reported, the social media hype was the main factor behind the entire incident, which led to mob attack, it said.

In this context, the Association expresses its surprise that such an incident could happen in a civilised society.

The GUTA observed that easy accessibility to social networking, which is in fact being articulated and promoted for the benefit of the society at large, are being used by those who are not at all prepared to handle it. Most ironically, huge amount of morphed and unfiltered information has engulfed the world of social networking sans any effective mechanism to monitor and control it, it added.

The Association feels that such unscrupulous use of information has a close correlation with the incident. It has urged the government, particularly the police, to implement a robust mechanism for monitoring and controlling the cyber traffic.

The Association further observed that there is an urgent need of making the society aware of cyber boom. It also observed that the adverse results of the unhindered access to the digital world, particularly the social networking apps and sites without being nurtured with adequate level of information, can be seen in several recent incidents, leading to social unrest in the State.
