GU team takes part in Indo-Bhutan cultural exchange programme

GUWAHATI, Oct 9 - As part of celebration of 50 years of Indo-Bhutan friendship, a 14-member team of the Gauhati University visited Sherubtse College, Royal University of Bhutan during October 5-7.

During the visit, an international cultural exchange programme was successfully conducted between the two institutions, a press release said.

The GU team was led by Dr Ranjan Kr Kakati, Director, Students� Welfare, GU. Welcoming the guests, the President of Sherubtse College, Royal University of Bhutan mentioned that this type of cultural exchange programmes could strengthen the bond between the two countries.

Dr Kakati in his speech said that though India and Bhutan have a vast cultural diversity in many cases, there are many similarities between the two countries. The mask dance of Bhutan which is an integral part of the country�s remarkable cultural and religious traditions, has a great resemblance with the Assamese Mukha Bhaona and with many mask dances of other parts of India.

Dr Jayashree Devi, Dept of Performing Arts, GU, performed Gurubandana. Another member of the GU team Nipamoni Deka, performed Sattriya dance. The GU team also performed Bihu dance, folk orchestra, tokari geet and patriotic songs during the cultural exchange programme.

The other members of the GU team were Hirakjyoti Sarma, Madhusmita Mahanta, Swarika Singha, Jayashree Sarma, Biswashi Mahanta, Biplob Gogoi, Anurag K Borgohain, Himangshu Rajbongshi, Arup Jyoti Kalita, Champak Bordoloi and Jitumoni Das.
