GUWAHATI, March 30 Governor PB Acharya, who is also the Chancellor of Gauhati University (GU), today appealed to the members of the GU community to engage themselves for revitalising the educational leadership of the university.

He said they should also work for transforming the university from an institution of higher education to an institution of higher development of intellect, will and moral through continuous self-development, collaboration and sharing of knowledge with institutions of excellence that would place it among the most sought-after institutions in the country and abroad. The Governor was delivering his presidential address at the 25th convocation of the GU.

He also urged the students not to be self-centred intellectuals for their own prosperity, but to be conscious and ready to address societys needs to make the country prosperous.

He maintained he strongly believed that the GU would emerge as the topmost destination for higher education in the country in the days to come.

Addressing the function, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi called upon the university authorities to improve the quality of higher education. He also appealed to them to engage themselves in efforts for finding solutions to the natural disasters caused by flood and erosion and the socio-economic problems like unemployment. The university should join hands with the government in resolving such issues, he said. To resolve the problem of unemployment, skill development should be a thrust area, he maintained.

Delivering his convocation address, Prof Dipak C Jain, Director of the Sasin Graduate Institute of Business Administration of Chulalongkorn University, Thailand, called upon the GU students to do something beautiful and meaningful.

Prof Jain, an alumnus of GU and Darrang College, also underlined the need to cultivate the inherent talents of the students. He said, Success today requires knowing yourself. It requires understanding your real passions and then having the courage to cultivate them, individually and alongside mentors and colleagues, adding, the challenge ahead of you is never greater than the force behind you.

The Governor presented the degree of D Lit (Honoris Causa) to 90-year-old linguist Prof Pramod Chandra Bhattacharyya and degree of Ph D (Honoris Causa) to 61-year old anti-witch hunting crusader Birubala Rabha and 56-year-old forest man Jadav Payeng.

The Governor also presented PhD degrees to 123 researchers of the period between 2012 and 2014, M Phil degrees to six researchers and post-graduate and undergraduate degrees to 921 students of the faculties of arts, science, commerce, management, law, engineering, technology and medical sciences.

The function was also addressed by Union Minister of State for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Dr Jitendra Singh and GU Vice Chancellor Dr Mridul Hazarika.
