By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, June 10 Gauhati University (GU), the 62-year-old university set up by the people of the State, has bagged the 26th position among the top 50 universities of the country selected by the news magazine India Today.

The survey through which the India Today determined the status of these universities was named the First India Today- Nielsen Survey on the countrys leading higher educational institutions. The results of the survey were published in the May 31 issue of the news magazine. The Banaras Hindu University (BHU) has been adjudged the best of all the universities of the country by the survey.

The news magazine said that 342 experts across the country ranked the 50 universities on the parameters of reputation, quality of academic input, quality of faculty, research publications/reports/projects, infrastructure, placement opportunities and enrolment for higher education.

The methodology of ranking was based on both perceptual and factual data, which provided a comprehensive picture of each of the 140 universities surveyed for the purpose. The idea was to identify institutions with broad-based post-graduate studies through a multi-stream approach in arts, science and commerce. Institutions, which offer courses in a range of streams, not merely in one branch of knowledge, were covered by the survey, said the news magazine.

GU has scored 30 points in matters of its reputation, 31 points in matters of its academic quality, 29 points in matters of faculty quality, 31 points in matters of research projects, 28 points in matters of infrastructure and 30 points in matters of placements, said the news magazine.

The Assam University, Silchar has been adjudged 48th by the survey.
