GU Physics dept, Austrian institute sign MoU

GUWAHATI, Sept 24 - The Stefan-Meyer-Institute (SMI), Vienna, Austria recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Gauhati University (GU) Physics department.

According to a press release received here today, Dr Kushal Kalita, a faculty from the GU Department of Physics, is leading the GU group with his PhD students Kamal Dutta, Harun Al Rashid and others, and actively working with the International Positron Annihilation at Darmstadt (PANDA) at the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR), Gesellschaft f�r Schwerionenforschung, Darmstadt, Germany.

Dr Kalita�s SMI counterpart Dr Ken Suzuki is the leader in this project and his PhD student S Dominik visited Dr Kalita during May 21-28 last under a collaborative �Physics-day-1� programme. Both the institutes are in collaboration for the last two years or so.

The MoU proposes establishing closer links in the areas of nuclear physics, experimental high energy physics, detector development, R&D and simulation and physics analyses.

An attempt has been made to encourage the younger students towards research and as an initiative, Dr Ken delivered a talk on topic �Stefan Meyer Institute in Vienna and studies of hadrons with the PANDA Experiment at FAIR� at the GU Physics department.
