GU PGSU poll process begins

JALUKBARI, Sept 5 - Six days ahead of the Post Graduate students� Union (PGSU) elections, the prospective candidates of the Gauhati University filed their nominations today.

Student leaders accompanied by hundreds of supporters chanting slogans reached the BKB Auditorium to file their nominations for the upcoming university elections on September 11. Candidates� supporters took out huge processions from the hostels to the beats of dhol-nagada prior to filing nominations. They carried huge banners and shouted slogans in support of their candidates.

Gauhati University officials said that some nominations were cancelled as the candidates were not fortified with the required qualifications. While some of them had low attendance, some other students had left the forms incomplete without proper seal and signature from their respective departments.

The Post Graduate University Students� Union (PGSU) poll process began on Monday with the start of filing of nomination papers. The aspirants filed their papers amidst tight security.

The Returning Officer (RO) for the election is Prof Archana Sharma of the Department of Economics, GU.

Election officials for the PGSU election said that 40 student leaders filed nomination papers, including 2 for the post of president, 3 for vice president, 2 for general secretary and 4 for cultural secretary.

The nomination papers were scrutinised today and the candidates would be allowed to withdraw their names tomorrow. Polling will be held on September 11 and the results will be announced on September 12.
