JALUKBARI, Oct 6 - The Gauhati University Hospital has been locked down and its Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Narendra Narayan Talukdar placed under suspension following the death of a B.Tech student last night.
The deceased, Himangshu Neog (22), was a 3rd semester student in the Department of Electronics and Communication (Institute of Science and Technology)and a boarder of Gopinath Bordoloi RCC 2 Boys Hall.
Speaking to The Assam Tribune, a boarder of the same hostel said, Himangshu was suffering from a severe gastro-related problem. He lost control while going to the toilet to relieve himself and fell to the ground, severely injuring his head and becoming unconscious. We rushed him to the university hospital but due to lack of experienced doctors and equipment there, he was referred to the Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital (MMCH). The university hospital authorities sent him in an ambulance which was not well-equipped. The oxygen mask was broken and no nurse or trained person was sent with the patient. He died before reaching the MMCH.
A meeting was held today between all stakeholders, prefects of all hostels and the university authorities where the decision was taken to suspend CMO Talukdar and to institute an inquiry into the unfortunate incident.
Meanwhile, the university students recalled that in 2016 the then Health Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma had announced during a visit to the GU that all medical facilities would be provided in the hospital within a month of his visit. Its 2018 now but we still dont have a proper medical unit, they rued.
The Gauhati University Students Union has given seven days time to the varsity authorities to improve the condition of the hospital. It warned that in the event of the authorities failure to meet its demand, it would be compelled to take some harsh measures.
The university authorities have assured the students that their demand would be met.
