GUWAHATI, April 10 - In the domestic ranking list of Indian universities published by the Ministry of Human Resource, Government of India, on April 4, the Gauhati University figured in the 22nd position.
The only university from the State above the Gauhati University in the list is the Tezpur Central University, which occupied the fourth position.
The university fraternity has expressed satisfaction and feels that this will boost the morale of this premier institution of higher education in the region to work harder in future.
It is also to be noted that up to the 11th position in the list all are Central universities, and Gauhati University stands in the fourth position among the State universities in India. The other State universities up in the list are Punjab University, Bharathiar University and Goa University, occupying the 12th, 14th and 20th position respectively.
There are 343 State universities in the country, among which the Gauhati University stands at the fourth position.
�If considered from the parameters applied for the ranking, the Gauhati University is above Viswa Bharati, which stands at the 11th position in respect of Teaching, Learning and Resources, above the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology occupying the eighth rank in terms of Research, Professional Practice and Collaborative Performances,� Gauhati University sources said.
Similarly, the Gauhati University is at par with the Indian Institute of Science which has topped the ranking but it is above this institution in respect of outreach activities and above Jamia Hamdard University, New Delhi, occupying 18th position so far as perception, another criterion, is concerned. The overall score for GU is 68.58.
