GU decision on TDC back students

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, April 20 The Gauhati University (GU) authorities today announced that the students having back in the Three-Year-Degree Courses (TDCs) second semester would be allowed to appear in both the sixth and second semester examinations being held in the months of May and June next respectively.

This decision of the GU authorities came in the wake of a stir launched by the State unit of the Students Federation of India (SFI).

The GU notification issued today announcing this decision also stated that the schedule of the practical examinations of the TDC sixth semester of those students and the date of filing up of forms for the second semester examinations will be notified soon. The notification is signed by Dr Debahari Talukdar, Controller of Examinations (in-charge) of the University.

The State unit of the SFI said in a statement here that hundreds of its members today assembled on the GU campus as part of their ongoing agitation on the issue of removing the irregularities in the semester system of the University.

But the GU authorities let loose the personnel of the police and paramilitary forces on the agitationists, instead of solving the issue through amicable discussion.

This agitated the students and they tried to enter the office campus of the Vice Chancellor resulting in baton charge by the security forces on them. Around 50 protestors sustained injuries in the incident and 20 of them were grievously injured. While one student has seven stitches on his head, several others have got the bones of their hands and legs fractured, said the SFI.

Following this, a section of the University employees also came out of their offices in protest against the police action, said the SFI in its statement signed by its president Nirankush Nath and secretary Ritu Ranjan Das.

The University authorities later held a meeting with the agitating SFI members at the Phanidhar Dutta Seminar Hall of the University and decided to make the above announcement, said Ritu Ranjan Das while speaking to this newspaper.
