GU assurance to Sahitya Sabha

GUWAHATI, March 7 - The Gauhati University (GU) has assured the Asam Sahitya Sabha that it would re-introduce Assamese as a medium of instruction at the degree level. It will also accept Assamese as a medium for writing theses, etc.

Disclosing this in a statement here, Sabha general secretary Padum Rajkhowa said that GU Vice Chancellor Dr Mridul Hazarika also assured a delegation of the literary body led by its president Dr Paramananda Rajbongshi that modern Indian language (MIL) would be made compulsory at the degree level. The university will also publish the Assamese medium textbooks of degree level and use both Assamese and English in matters related to its administration.

GU will also complete all the works connected with the seven volumes of the history of Assamese folk literature during the current year, said the VC to the Sabha delegation.

The GU VC�s assurances came in response to the demands raised by the Sabha on the issues in question.
