GSI experts to study sinking of land at Hunthar Veng

AIZAWL, Aug 23 - Two experts from the Geological Survey of India (GSI), Shillong, arrived here today to inspect the sinking of land at Hunthar Veng locality. Official sources said that the two senior geologists � G Rangmei and Pu WS Rocky � would study and inspect the subsidence area at Hunthar locality and submit a detailed report to the Government.

The two experts will stay here till September 3 to study the causes behind the phenomenon and the condition of the sinking area. They will also carry out a study on the management of the sinking land.

At least 50 families have been affected by the sinking of land at Hunthar locality. Altogether 41 families have so far been evacuated due to landslide and sinking of land.

Mizoram Home Minister R Lalzirliana, Information & Public Relations Minister Lal Thanzara and Disaster Management & Rehabilitation Minister C Ngunlianchunga on Monday visited the sinking area at Hunthar locality along the National Highway 54 and interacted with the local leaders over rehabilitation measure and the future course of action.

Taking stock of the situation, Home Minister R Lalzirliana said the Government was making the best efforts to address the problems faced by the locals. He said that the Government would provide all possible rehabilitation facilities to families whose houses have been lost due to the sinking of land. He added that efforts have also been taken to shift the BPL families to community houses constructed under the BSUP scheme for BPL families.

Lalzirliana said that the BPL families would be allowed to construct dwelling houses at places which the Government had earmarked for those affected by the sinking of land at Ramhlun Vengthar.

Information & Public Relations Minister Lal Thanzara, who is also the constituency MLA, said though the Government was attending to the problems of the victims, constructing side drains and taking other measures to check the sinking of land, natural disaster was beyond human control. He thanked the various government departments for extending help to the victims.
