GSA league matches end in draws

By Sports reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 5 Both the relegation group matches of the RG Baruah Super Division Football League at the Nehru Stadium here today ended in draws.

On the first ground, the FCI Sports Club and Dynamo Club encounter remained goalless while on the second ground, Navajyoti Club rallied to hold Sunrise Athletic Club 1-1.

The Dynamo-FCI encounter was a fast-paced one as both the teams adopted attacking tactics from the initial stage. Dynamo had a major share of the ball and kept the FCI defenders busy throughout the course. Nigerian Onyeama Francis Okechukwu, Firmosang Singson, Manjit Rabha and Gorachand Marandi were very much on their toes and built several goal bound moves. But due to slippery underfoot condition they failed in beating the FCI custodian Gobinda Boro.

However, the easiest scoring opportunity of the match was created by FCI in the later part of the first session. Sourab Chutia set the ball for midfielder N Momocha Singh from the right flank. But the ball rebounded off the cross piece from Momochas volley from inside the box.

For FCI Rakesh Das, Prabal Pratim Deka and Bidur Chetry did some hard work at the up front.

Dynamo defenders managed to overpower their opponent attackers maintaining a proper balance infront of their fort.

Navajyoti survive: A last minute goal by defender Amol Boro saved the match for Navajyoti which was trailing till the 90th minute.

Sunrise went 1-0 ahead in the 30th minute through their Nigerian striker Festus O Johnavah who scored from a goal mouth melee. They should have enhanced the margin in the 15th minute of the second session had Nabin Chwria not failed to push the ball into an empty goal. They finally paid the penalty for that and conceded a late goal which snatched two valuable points from them.

With todays drawn matches FCI remained at the top with eight points followed by Navajyoti (7), Sunrise (6) and Dynamo (5).

Todays matches (championship round): ASEB vs Ganga SC; NF Rly vs Green Valley.
