Grief-stricken people pay homage to Nilutpal, Abhijit

SIVASAGAR, June 12 - Hundreds of grief-stricken people today paid homage to Nilutpal Das and Abhijit Nath in different parts of this oil township. The duo were lynched by a horde of superstitious villagers at Panjuri in Dokmoka, Karbi Anglong on June 8.

In Gaurisagar, hundreds of youths took out a procession condemning the barbaric act that has brought shame to the State and demanded death penalty to all the perpetrators. It may be mentioned that Abhijit Nath�s parents hails from Suntolichiga, near Gaurisagar and hence there was a spontaneous reaction among the people who came out in large numbers. The procession organised by the All Assam Nath Jogi Sanmelan demanded stern action and called upon all to condemn superstitious beliefs. They later organised a meeting which was addressed, among others, by Ajit Nath, Jibon Krishna Goswami and Dilip Nath.

Later, hundreds of people gathered at the ASTC campus and the protest rally was addressed by Debajyoti Das, president, AJYCP, Sivasagar district unit, Debabrat Das, organising secretary, AASU, Sivasagar, scribes associated with APCU, Bobita Das, Srimanta Dutta and many other social organisations. The organisers later submitted memoranda to the Governor, Chief Minister and the Home Commissioner protesting against the heinous crime. At Joysagar Tiniali and at the Shiva Doul premises too, hundreds lit earthen lamps and candles mourning the incident.

On June 11, responding to a call by Asom Yuva Sakti, hundreds of people marched in a silent procession from Sivasagar Boarding Field with placards demanding action against the killers of Abhijit and Nilutpal and submitted memorandums to the DC, Sivasagar. Baruwoti Yuva Sangha organised a rally at Charing while the Brihattar Asomiya Yuva Parishad brought out a torchlight procession at Jhanji Jamuguri. Nath Gaon Yuva Samaj organised a protest rally at Kalugaon Kirai Ali. The Sangrami Yuva Parishad, Asom and the Ujoni Asom Muslim Kalyan Parishad submitted memorandums separately to the DC, Sivasagar yesterday. The Brihattar Asomiya Yuva Mancha, Desangmukh unit organised a protest rally at Desungmukh yesterday and condemned the comment of the Karbi Anglong DC Mridul Mahanta on the ghastly incident at Dokmoka where the two innocent youths lost their lives. The Brihattar Asomiya Yuva Mancha, Asom brought out a massive protest rally at Demow Chariali demanding death penalty to all the perpetrators of the crime and burnt the effigy of Mridul Mahanta, the Deputy Commissioner of Karbi Anglong district.
