Green Valley set up title clash with ASEB

By Sports reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 26 Local outfits Green Valley Sports Club and ASEB Sports Club will meet for the third time on the Nehru Stadium ground as both the teams have qualified for the summit clash of the 63rd Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi Trophy Football Tournament.

In the second semifinal played at the Nehru Stadium here today, Green Valley defeated Assam Rifles Soccer Team 5-4 in penalty shoot-out after the match ended in a goalless draw.

The final is slated for Sunday.

In the GSA Super Division League this season both the teams met twice. On the first occasion, the match ended goalless while in the championship round, Green Valley defeated ASEB 2-1. However ASEB emerged champions in the Super League while Green Valley became the runner-up.

Todays semifinal was a mediocre one as hardly a few goal bound moves were visible during the whole course. The Assam Rifles team was marginally ahead as far ball possession is concerned. Particularly in the second session the ball was under their control for major part.

The 33-year-old Akum Ao was the live wire at the up front and teaming up with Ajit Singh, M Chetry and M Kamu he caused constant threat to the Green Valley defenders. Akum made two valiant efforts on both sessions but the opponent goal keeper Cheeradeep Chattopadhaya saved his team in both the occasions. For Green Valley, George Prince and Aziz Shah took initiative in building moves. But as their hit man Michael Lucky was not fully fit and as a result their striking force could not act according to the plan.

In the tie breaker Green Valley converted all the five shots through Aziz Shah, Samson Basumatary, Aollo Rongmei, Maneswar Mushahary and Jenga Rongmei. For Assam Rifles Akum Ao, M Chetry, D Mukhim and Tashi Pinsho Butia were the successful shooters while K Keipjins shot was beautifully saved by Cheeradeep diving full to his left.
