Grandfather rapes two grand-daughters

By CORRESPONDENT

TURA, Sept 1 - In a shocking incident, a 65-year-old grandfather repeatedly raped his two minor granddaughters before he was arrested by police following a complaint by the father of the victims.

The two minor victims are aged 9 and 10 and according to the FIR were raped multiple times by the suspect.

The incident occurred in Dimapara village in South Garo Hills. The FIR was filed only on August 28. Interestingly, despite the severity of the crime, clan (mahari) members of the grandfather were allegedly spreading lies defaming the character of the two victims.

We have arrested the accused, Midua Momin after the complaint. A medical test was also done on the two girls which has confirmed rape, said SP, Abraham T Sangma.

The SP said a police team would visit the village and ask the clan members to not interfere. If they continue defaming the girls and continue victimising the girls, we will take legal action against them, he said.

Condemning the incident and the interference by clan members, social activist, Jaynie Sangma said, This case is one of a serious breach of trust. The two children trusted their grandfather and had to pay with being raped by him over months.

The role of the Maharis should have been to punish the culprit for his crime but they chose to side with him instead. This is absolutely deplorable, added Sangma.
