Govt to transport essential items to Manipur

By The Assam Tribune

IMPHAL, May 11 (PTI) - The Manipur government has decided to transport essential items and goods from Silchar in south Assam to the city in view of the indefinite economic blockade on Dimapur-Imphal National Highway by a student association for past three weeks.

Manipur Sports Minister and government spokesman N Biren today told reporters the State Cabinet yesterday discussed the present situation arising out of economic blockade by All Naga Students Association Manipur (ANSAM) and decided to bring essential commodities along the Silchar-Jiribam-Imphal National Highway.

ANSAM has been protesting from past three weeks against the State government's proposal to hold elections to autonomous district councils (ADC) in the hill area on May 26 on the grounds that not enough monetary power was given to the ADCs.

Biren pointed out that petrol stock in the State would last for 7 to 10 days.
