Govt to provide free textbooks to students before Jan 1: Himanta

BAIHATA CHARIALI, Dec 25 - �The State government has given more importance to the educational scenario of the State by introducing some ambitious schemes for the welfare of the student community,� said Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, State Education minister at a felicitation-cum-scholarship distribution function for meritorious students of Jalukbari LAC at the Bezera HS school playground on Sunday.

Sarma, in his speech, said that the State government has taken steps to provide free textbooks to students before January 1, and for this purpose, the Education department has already supplied necessary copies of books to the respective schools.

It may be mentioned here that this programme was delayed last year since the Hindustan Paper Corporation (HPC) was unable to supply necessary papers to the Assam State Textbook Production and Publication Corporation Limited on time.

The Education minister informed that the government has decided to give free admissions up to university level and to provide free textbooks and free filling up of examination forms up to higher secondary level. Besides these, the government is thinking to hold Gunotsav at the HS level also and to establish a quality school in every panchayat through a scheme titled, �Pratyahban�.

The government will provide scooties to 1000 girl students on January 12 next for their outstanding performances in the last higher secondary examination and it will increase the number of beneficiaries of this scheme up to 5000 next year and up to 10,000 next to next year to encourage girl students of the State.

Moreover, the minister said that after completion of two under-construction medical colleges, the seats for admissions will be increased to 1100 instead of existing 700.

Sarma also announced that the construction work of a bridge on Brahmaputra connecting Guwahati and North Guwahati will begin in 2018.

In the meeting held under the aegis of Bezera mandal yuva morcha of BJP, the first division, star mark and distinction mark holders in HSLC and HS examinations, 2017 of the Jalukbari LAC were given citations and cash awards by the organising committee.
