Govt to form panel on ST status demand

GUWAHATI, March 14 - The Government of Assam will constitute a committee comprising representatives of six communities to liaise with the Centre and the State government to expedite the process of according ST status to these communities.

Holding a meeting with representatives of the six communities on the Assam Legislative Assembly premises here today, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said the committee would ensure seamless communication between the demanding communities and the Central and State governments. While acknowledging the necessity of granting ST status, Sonowal assured the visiting representatives to take the matter immediately to New Delhi for appropriate intervention of the Centre.

Sonowal also reiterated his government�s commitment to act as a catalyst to ensure granting of ST status to Moran, Muttock, Koch Rajbonshi, Tai Ahom, Chutia and tea tribe communities. He assured the representatives that the State government has accorded importance to bring the demand of the six communities in its agenda of priorities.
