Govt to fill up 16,000 posts in panchayat dept

GUWAHATI, June 17 � The State government will soon fill up 16,000 new permanent posts in the panchayat department, besides recruiting another over 2,200 computer operator-cum-accountants for the gram panchayats across Assam.

Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Rockybul Hussain said today that Cabinet approval for the 16,000 new posts has been secured and the process for recruitment of the employees would start soon.

The new recruits would be posted at the gram panchayats, anchalik panchayats and zilla parishad as part of an initiative to strengthen manpower.

In addition, the process for recruitment of 2,202 computer operator-cum-accountant on a contractual basis, one for each gram panchayat, has already been started.

Hussain said there are 2,202 gram panchayats, 185 anchalik panchayats and 21 zilla parishads in the State and the government has taken certain initiatives for decentralization of power and for empowering the panchayats and improving their infrastructure based on the Purkayastha Committee recommendations.

The government has also carried out at least two social audits in each gram panchayat to root out discrepancies.

Hussain added that payment of wages under the MNREGA has been fully shifted to account transfer system Electronic Fund Management System (EFMS) is being introduced to prevent embezzlement.
