Govt to blame for crisis in Law College: Dutta

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 14 Public activist Prof Deven Dutta took to task the State Education department, Opposition parties and different other organisations for shying away from their responsibilities and blamed their non-accountability psyche and surrender mentality for the pathetic state of affairs gripping the prestigious Bishnu Ram Medhi Government Law College, the only Government law college in the region.

Prof Dutta, while talking to mediapersons here on Sunday, flayed the Government saying that the evil of privatization had taken its toll on the public representatives due to which they were willing to surrender before the private forces at the cost of the public sector.

The BRM Government Law College, it may be mentioned, has been in the news for the last fifteen days or so for all the wrong reasons. The students of the college have lodged a formal protest before the authorities alleging that the principal in-charge is indulging in uncalled-for activities thereby harassing the students, especially the girl students, by making unnecessary remarks against them.

The functioning of the college has also been largely affected due to the agitational programme.

The students had even submitted a memorandum to the Director, Higher Education, Commissioner and Secretary (Higher Education), Principal Secretary, Education department and Vice-Chancellor, Gauhati University, seeking redressal of their grievances but to no avail.

If the ruling party or the Opposition parties cannot identify with the issues of the public, then what is politics for? This is the fundamental question, Prof Dutta questioned.

The college, which is going to celebrate its centenary after three years, is going through days of uncertainty. Neither there are adequate numbers of faculty members, nor does the college have qualified faculty members for the LLM course, which is pathetic to know, Prof Dutta pointed out.

They are encouraging private educational institutions like anything but have allowed the public sector institutions to go to the docks, he said.

Prof Dutta also expressed concern over the BRM Government Law College for flouting the student intake guidelines of the University Grants Commission (UGC).
