Govt to act against fake news in State

GUWAHATI, June 19 - Assam Chief Secretary Kumar Sanjay Krishna today gave instructions for immediate action against web portals and social media users engaged in false and fake news in the State.

The Chief Secretary, who held a discussion on the rapid increase in the number of news web portals in the State, asked the departments concerned to keep a strict vigil on such news web portals and social media platforms.

Commissioner and Secretary of Information and Public Relations Department, Preetom Saikia and Director Anupam Choudhury were present in the discussion.

Observing that involvement of some news web portals and social media platforms in dissemination of fake news has come to the notice of the State government, the Chief Secretary said that such false and fabricated information can misled the general public.

�Besides, there is a huge possibility of these having an adverse effect particularly on the upcoming generation. False information and fake news circulated in such web portals and social media platforms may cause harm to our society. Moreover, it is also observed that social media platforms are being exploited by many vested interest groups,� an official release stated.

The Chief Secretary also gave instructions to take immediate action against such news web portals and social media users as per the cyber crime laws.
