RAHA, Sept 27 - Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today said that the State Government has taken a slew of initiatives to bring changes in the Social Welfare department.

The National Nutrition Mission is aimed at improvement of nutrition standard in the country. Under this scheme, children, pregnant women and lactating mothers will be benefitted, the Chief Minister said while taking part in an awareness programme organized by the Social Welfare Department in association with the district administrations of Nagaon, Morigaon and Hojai to mark the National Nutrition Month at Raha in Nagaon district today.

He also called upon the officials of the department to extend all possible help in developing the state.

Sonowal said, Desired physical growth and mental development could not be achieved if one lacked proper nutrition. The aim of Rashtriya Poshan Maah is to improve nutrition in the country by covering all districts across the country under this scheme.

He pointed out that during the tenure of previous government funds meant for nutritional purpose of children, pregnant women and mothers were siphoned off and that tarnished the image of the Social Welfare Department.

Pramila Rani Brahma in her speech highlighted the objectives of Poshan Abhiyan which aims to prevent and reduce malnutrition, stunting in children, low birth weight amongst others and stressed on improving the nutrition outcomes through effective monitoring and timely intervention by the Anganwadi supervisors, helpers and workers.

Addl Secretary of Social Welfare, Government of Assam, Jishnu Baruah delivered the welcome address, informing the gathering the objective of National Nutrition Mission.
