Govt move on textile institute resented

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Feb 10 The All Assam Polytechnic Gazetted Teachers Association (AAPGTA) has resented the move of the State Government to establish an engineering college under the Society Act on the Assam Textile Institute campus, by evicting the Assam Textile Institute, which is the oldest technical institute of the NE region.

The Association has stated, in a press statement here today, that the Assam Textile Institute is the lone institute for textile education in the entire NE region. It has made significant contributions to the socio-economic development of the region.

The institute has been working towards manpower development and imparting training in conventional and non-conventional trades and skills. The institute is the only one of its types offering courses in textile technology, garment technology and fashion technology under one roof.

Eviction of the institute from its present site will totally erase the name of the NE regions oldest technical institute. Hence, the Association said the Government should set up the proposed engineering college at a different and more suitable site.

Instead of being cowed down by the problems facing the Textile Institute, the Government should extend its support to it so that it could overcome the challenges it is facing at present. It needs to understand that research and scientific application will enhance technological advances and innovation of the weaving tradition of the NE region. The regions skills and technology need to compete with the advancements made elsewhere while keeping the rich tradition of the region alive and that is possible with an institution like the Assam Textile Institute, said the Association.
